When you think of the top of the NZ iTunes charts you think of Macklemore, PSY and whatever other artist that is so hot right now. That was until Fletch and Vaughan on The Edge, launched a campaign that saw iconic song ‘Africa’ by Toto reach Number One on the iTunes Charts yesterday.

"We had been discussing how song choices on The X Factor influenced the music charts, and wondered how much sway we would have in getting our favourite sing-along into the Top 50 of iTunes." said Vaughan.

But far from stopping in the Top 50 after some impassioned pleas on air and online the 30 year old track reached Number One by 9:30pm last night.

Toto themselves got wind of their track revival and took to Facebook to thank New Zealanders for their support.

"Just found out our song Africa is Number One on iTunes in New Zealand this week. Truly amazing after 30+ years. Thanks to all in NZ and hope we get to see you ASAP!" says Toto.

This is the first time the song has reached Number One since its release over 30 years ago.

Fletch and Vaughan’s infatuation with the iconic track began when a listener from Africa contacted the show, they then used the song ‘Africa’ as their show music bed, and sung along to the chorus.

However, it was yesterday’s on air conversation which sparked the crusade.

Where to from here? "We would love interview Toto, and present them with a congratulatory certificate! We would certainly love to see it reach Number One in the New Zealand Singles Chart, although we don't want Dane Rumble to go hungry because we revived a 30 year old classic" says Fletch.
