First elimination from MasterChef NZ

Thiago de Almeida Schalch and Janaina Mendes became the first duo from the Top 15 to leave MasterChef New Zealand on Monday, February 3 (7.30 pm - 8.30 pm) on TV ONE.

In tonight’s show the Top 15 contestants had two hours to make two Little Black Forest Cakes for guest judge, Donna Hay.

The challenge was run in two parts, with all the duos splitting into two and one contestant from each duo tackling the first hour, the other the second hour.

Mother and daughter duo, Nicola and Jordan Shearer, had the best cakes of the day and won an advantage in the next challenge.

Brazilian Thiago de Almeida Schalch was non-plussed about making the notoriously difficult cakes.

"I have baked before, I like to be precise, so - no problem!" he boasted to his partner Janaina Mendes.

But running short of time, he was berated by judge Josh Emett for not getting his cakes into the oven fast enough.

In a rush, he omitted a key ingredient - sherry - from the mixture.

But handing over halfway to Janaina, the duo was upbeat.

"I know how to make cake, and your cake is very good," Janaina told him.

"We will do very well."

The positive vibes continued to tasting, with Thiago talking up the pair’s creation.

"I can see that the cake is perfectly done, it’s beautiful!" he told the cameras.

"So I’m really proud of the work we’ve done."

The mood changed when judge Simon Gault picked up the first mistake.

"I can see straight away that they’ve forgotten to put the cherries on," he told his fellow judges.

"There’s no cherry or kirsch taste, so it’s just a chocolate cake," complained Donna Hay.

Josh Emett spared no punches.

"If there’s one word that I could describe it, it’s watery," he said.

"There’s no richness to it, it’s boring, it's flat: it’s a poorly made cake."

In the Bottom Two alongside Glyn Rudolph and James Culleton, the duo was in shock.

"I wasn’t expecting to be on the bottom," gasped Thiago.

"Oh my god, I don’t believe this!" moaned Janaina.

"Thiago and Janaina, you did not give us Black Forest Cakes, you gave us plain chocolate cakes," Josh told them.

"Where were the cherries?" he asked. "And where was the kirsch? They were watery, boring and unappealing.

"They are the worst cakes of the day."

Surprised and disappointed, the duo left the MasterChef kitchen.

"I was here to be a MasterChef," Janaina reflected.

"Now we are going, it is the end of a dream."
