HarperCollins to publish controversial memoir on Scientology

William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, today announced plans to publish Jenna Miscavige Hill’s headline-making memoir about her life inside the Church of Scientology. The book, entitled Beyond Belief: My Secret Life inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape, will be published on February 1, 2013. In her memoir, Jenna--the niece of the church’s leader, David Miscavige--tells the dramatic and bizarre true story of growing up in Scientology and how she ultimately was able to break away from the church. The project was acquired by Lisa Sharkey, Senior Vice President and Director of Creative Development at HarperCollins from Madeleine Morel at 2M Communications and will be written with New York Times bestselling author Lisa Pulitzer.

In the wake of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ divorce, unprecedented scrutiny has been focused on Scientology and the experience of children in the religion. In this memoir Jenna reveals the strange and disturbing details of her own childhood in Scientology’s highest ranks, including her disconnection from her parents and her time in the secretive Sea Organization. She explains the lure of the mysterious and controversial religion founded in 1952 by American science-fiction author L. Ron Hubbard and sheds light on some of the most troubling issues surrounding the organization-from its infamous disconnection policy and the dissolution of families, to child labor practices, to an examination of its fundraising practices.

"I am thrilled to be working with William Morrow to share the story of my life and bring attention to a number of serious matters surrounding the church, especially Scientology's treatment of children," said Jenna. "People will be shocked to learn the truth about what goes on in Scientology right under their noses. The story will raise many questions about the Church and what they are able to get away with it in this day and age."

Delving into the minds of the religion’s devout followers, she also explores the allure of Scientology to celebrities and non-celebrities alike, showing why celebrity Scientologists are treated differently than public Scientologists and illuminating the role celebrities play in promoting the church to the outside world.

"A lot has been written in the media about Scientology, but Jenna is the first and only member of the Miscavige family to give an inside perspective on the highest orders of this fascinating and secretive world. Jenna Miscavige Hill has a riveting story to tell of a childhood lost to an organization run by her very own uncle, David Miscavige, the head of the Church of Scientology itself," says Lisa Sharkey. While plenty of second- and third-hand hearsay about Scientology has appeared in tabloids around the world, Beyond Belief is an actual, first-person account of growing up in one of the world’s most controversial religions. With unparalleled insight into Scientology’s upper ranks, this book will set the record straight from someone who had no choice but to join and no choice but to escape.
