It's A Revival Again! -- Make This An Abba Christmas!

10 DECEMBER 2008 - Sweden has given us many things; the Tetra Pak, the zipper, the ball bearing, and dynamite. All very useful things, but Sweden's most glorious offering came in the form of a four-piece group comprising Agnetha, Benny, Bjrn, and Anni-Fred - together they were ABBA.

We may be seventeen thousand kilometres from Sweden, but there's abbasolutely no doubt that New Zealand loves ABBA. This year's release of Mamma Mia! the movie and its accompanying soundtrack gave original ABBA devotees an excuse to whip out the old white bell-bottoms, while also garnering legions of new fans, kick-starting yet another wave of ABBA mania.

Mamma Mia! quickly became New Zealand's number one movie for 2008 and has grossed nearly $8 million at the local box office, while in the UK it has grossed more than $67 million, and in the US $131 million. The New Zealand DVD release of Mamma Mia! saw more records smashed when it achieved the biggest first week sales of any DVD title of the last two years! More than 50, 000 copies of the DVD have now been sold after only four weeks on shelves.

The official Mamma Mia! Soundtrack, released in July, has also been a huge success. It clocked up four weeks at number one on the NZ Top 40 album chart and even now, five months later, it remains in the top 20 with sales rapidly approaching 3 times platinum.

ABBA Gold, a collection of ABBA favourites, has also enjoyed a boom with more than 15,000 copies of the album selling since Mamma Mia! hit cinema screens. That means the release clocked up another platinum certification in less than six months of this year, taking the total tally for ABBA Gold to 16 times platinum in New Zealandand numbers continue to grow!

It doesn't end there; the ABBA phenomenon has now entered the gaming arena thanks to SingStar ABBA for PlayStation®. More than 1,400 copies of SingStar ABBA flew off shelves in the first week of release in November making it New Zealand's top selling game that week.

So it's clear, we're all ABBA-crazy, so dust off the bell-bottoms, embrace your inner Euro star and make this Christmas and ABBA Christmas!
