Maori TV announces Warriors deal

Maori Television has confirmed a two-year deal with SKY to screen all Vodafone Warriors games free-to-air from March with the start of the 2014 NRL Telstra Premiership.

The Vodafone Warriors games will be shown on Maori Television on Sunday or Monday nights from March 9 on a delayed basis. Commentary for the 13 home games will be provided by ex-Warriors’ coach Tony Kemp and Maori Television presenter Te Arahi Maipi.

Haunui Royal, Maori Television’s general manager of programming, said he is thrilled to add the Vodafone Warriors to the existing rugby league coverage planned for 2014, which includes the Fox Memorial Shield and UK Super League games.

"The Warriors are a natural fit for Maori Television and we’re excited to be bringing the action to as many fans as possible so that families can enjoy the games together," he said.

"From grassroots through to the superstars, Maori Television has got rugby league covered."

Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said the club welcomed the new free-to-air rights deal.

"We’re keen for as many people as possible to have access to coverage of our games," he said.

"To complement live coverage of Vodafone Warriors games on SKY with coverage on Maori Television is a terrific outcome for the sporting public."

New Zealand Rugby League patron and Honorary Ambassador of the Vodafone Warriors Sir Peter Leitch said: "I can’t wait to watch the Warriors with the family on Maori TV. That’s Sunday nights in my house sorted.

"This is a great way to start 2014".

Maori Television’s agreement with SKY also enables its sister Te Reo channel to screen a weekly NRL match in addition to the Vodafone Warriors games.

Tune in to Maori Television to watch the Vodafone Warriors, starting March 9.
