Now I keep myself pretty abreast of the current world film news and gossip and I also check out most trailers that come out for films, which is almost expected behaviour from both a film lover and critic such as me. So I often either hear about a film first from the news, or if it slips through, I’ll see a trailer online before it actually hits cinemas. ‘Albert Nobbs’ was one film I hadn’t heard about in the trades, but I had first caught as a trailer, and it looked bloody interesting and I looked forward to seeing it! But like with most of my media screenings, I go in not knowing much, and sometimes nothing at all. So when I sat down this week for this film, and I realised in was in fact the film I had been really looking forward to, I suddenly had a massive smile and quickly got a little more comfortable in my seat so I could enjoy what should be a great film!

“Glenn Close plays a woman passing as a man in order to work and survive in 19th century Ireland. Some thirty years after donning men's clothing, she finds herself trapped in a prison of her own making.”

Well, do I think Glenn Close will get an Academy Award nomination for this performance? Yes! Do I think she will win? No. Now it’s not because her performance wasn’t great, but it’s because the film itself lacked in a few major areas including subtext and exposition which the characters often said aloud, including Close as the main character Nobbs. Because of this I honestly believe those elements will go against her performance unfortunately. There was also some strange choices when it came to casting and some directing choices, and even some of the story itself felt a little weak and I kind of wish it had a different ending. But such is life, and not all films can end the right way to please everyone. So though the film wasn’t as good as I hoped, I still think Close’s performance was great and I would not be surprised at all if she gets major recognition for it at next year’s award ceremonies.

7.5 out of 10 from me.
