Movie Review – Burke And Hare

When I first saw the trailer for this film I thought it looked really good and waited for it to come out at the cinemas. I was surprised when I checked my local cinema listings to find it wasn’t playing there, which was strange. I looked online and realised I was going to have to drive 15 minutes the other direction to find a cinema that was screening it. Not a good sign. But, despite that, and with not a whole lot of other stuff out at the time, I made my way out West to check out what I hoped would be a good comedy.

“Based on the true story about the famous murderers, 'Burke And Hare' follows the hapless exploits of these two men as they fall into the highly profitable business of providing cadavers for the medical fraternity in Nineteenth Century Edinburgh, then the centre of medical learning. The one thing they were short of was bodies.”

To me, a laugh is one where you actually make noise. Not a smirk, not a small puff of air out of the nose, but an actual physical noise out of your mouth that comes from deep within your stomach. This film, being a dark comedy, didn’t get a single laugh out of me! In fact, the trailer had all the best bits, and because I had already seen the trailer a couple of times, meant when those did turn up they weren’t funny any longer. When a comedy can’t make you laugh even once you know something very wrong has happened. It had a good cast, a good old school dark comedy director and looked like it should have been funny, but it wasn’t, and I can’t even put my finger on why it wasn’t. It was based around a true story which was interesting, but that was about the only interesting thing about it.

6 out of 10 from me.
