Movie Review – Crazy, Stupid, Love

Romantic comedies are often a dime a dozen. But, really, what film genre isn’t, right? So, when I saw the trailer for this film, ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’, I thought ‘here’s another rom-com just like the rest’, but it left me with a feeling that it’s a little different. With a strong cast, including a couple of the current ‘hip’ young Hollywood actors, and a slick add campaign, and maybe a rather timely movie to see for my own current life situation, made this an easy choice for when it finally hit cinemas. So, with that in mind, I bought my ticket, got my popcorn, and sat down for a fun ride.

“Cal and Emily have the perfect life together living the American dream... until Emily asks for a divorce. Now Cal, Mr Husband, has to navigate the single scene with a little help from his professional bachelor friend Jacob Palmer. Make that a lot of help...”

As this film played out I really liked it, but there was always this nagging thing in me that it seemed to not be focusing on the right story. It had two story arch’s following the different characters, with one way more prominent than the other. Each time it flipped between the two I couldn’t help but think ‘why are they doing this’, as clearly the other character and arch is more important. Once again though, I should have kept the faith, as by the end everything comes together and makes a whole lot of sense. In fact it had a great twist and made the pay off of the story way better than I first thought. Sure, it got a little convoluted near the end, but overall it did seem to fit the story and it did leave me satisfied and very entertained.

8.5 out of 10 from me!
