Movie Review – Fair Game

The war in Iraq was, and is, a topic of much debate raging over a wide area of issues but one of the biggest was why they went to war. Already this year I have seen a film based around this very subject, ‘The Green Zone’, and that was a great historically dramatised version of events on the ground in Iraq in those first few days and weeks of the war. I’m sure many people who didn’t know much about the war, and the reasons behind it, found it to have been a real eye opener. This film, ‘Fair Game’, on the other hand deals with the issues of going to war, but from the USA side of things, and the huge behind the scenes dramas that were going on in the intelligence community at the time over conflicting reports about Iraq. With a keen interest in history I knew this was a film I wanted to see and when I got my press invite I jumped at the chance to see it.

“Plame's status as a CIA agent was revealed by White House officials allegedly out to discredit her husband after he wrote a 2003 New York Times op-ed piece saying that the Bush administration had manipulated intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the invasion of Iraq.”

With Sean Penn in the male lead and Naomi Watts in the female lead bringing so much power to the acting, and with Doug Liman behind the camera with all his skill and class, makes this a top contender of a film on many fronts. The story itself I knew a little about, but when you have things dramatized on screen it makes the issues so much more real and scary knowing exactly how things came about. I’m sure over the years and decades to come there could be a lot more films of its ilk coming out and I think this, as well as ‘The Green Zone’, will be a part of a jigsaw of films that make up the real story behind the reasons for the war in Iraq.

9 out of 10 from me.
