Movie Review – The Guard

It’s not often I go into a movie thinking it’s only going to be alright, when really everything about it seems to say it’s going to be pretty damn good. I don’t know why that was the case with ‘The Guard’, but it just was. It screened at this year’s International Film Festival, and even though I missed a lot of films due to time, and ‘The Guard’ was marked down as one I would see if I could, I also didn’t batter an eye when I had to drop it during my first round of cuts from my schedule. Again, I can’t explain why that is, because it had a great cast, and the trailer was decent, but I guess it just didn’t grab me by the balls for some reason. Despite that though, when I was in the line tonight to see ‘Hanna’, I saw that ‘The Guard’ was still playing and something just came over me to see it, so I did, and I went in just hoping that decision didn’t bite me in the ass.

“Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a small-town Irish cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humor, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought straight-laced FBI agent Wendell Everett to his door.”

Well, it’s so good when you go into a film with reservations and come out thinking, ‘why the hell didn’t I think that wasn’t going to be as good as it was!?’ Because that’s exactly what this film was. It was great! It was funny, smart, well paced with a few little interesting twists, if you can call them that, and had some great one-liners that had me chuckling to myself in the theatre. All up this was just a great, and slightly different, comedy that I think most people will get a kick out of. I will say though that subtitles could have been useful in a few places as the heavy Irish accents got a little tough to follow at stages.

8.5 out of 10 from me.
