Movie Review – New Years Eve

When I first so the trailer for ‘New Years Eve’ I couldn’t help but feel it looks exactly like the film from last year ‘Valentine’s Day’. Low-and-behold, I find out it’s made by the exactly same people, and even though I never saw the first one, I at least knew what I was in for as I had heard a lot of people talk about the first one. They said it was really just an ensemble piece and that there wasn’t much meat on the bones, so to speak. The trailer, showing a massive cast of famous faces, made it look like it may be exactly the same, which meant you could end up with lots of characters, and not enough screen time to get attached or feel anything for them. So even though I had a feeling I was about to see a pretty light weight film, I at least hoped it would be half decently entertaining. With that, I sat down with a whole bunch of other media types, and settled into my seat with very little expectations.

“The lives of several couples and singles in New York intertwine over the course of New Year's Eve.”

Well I’ve never seen ‘Valentine’s Day’ but I now have a very good idea what to expect if I do see it, and it’s very much like what I had heard about, which was exactly what this film was. It was entertaining, with a few nice performances, but like with most ensemble movies, there’s just not enough screen time to really get to know anyone in the film, which in turn means you don’t really feel for any of the characters. That means if bad things, or good things happen to them, you just don’t really give a shit. Which means the only thing these films can really rely on is keeping the audience entertained throughout. In that respect this film did its job, and I would have to say ended up being as a good as I expected, which meant solid, but nothing more.

7 out of 10 from me.
