Movie Review – Paul

I’ve already reviewed a few alien films this year and many in the industry have dubbed it ‘year of the alien’ because there are just so many coming out in the market place.  With so many films coming out with a similar theme, one of them always has to take a slightly different angle, and from the slew of films hitting us it looked like ‘Paul’ was going to be that film. So, instead of taking the usual alien invasion story, this film instead takes the ‘stoner’/buddy/road movie comedy route with one of the gang, who embodies all of those traits, being the actual alien the story is based around. Add Simon Pegg and Nick Frost into the mix, from ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’ fame, and Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul the alien, you’re just asking for a great film!

“Two sci-fi geeks pilgrimage takes them to America's UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever. For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. When he discovers he's been taken prisoner, the space-travelling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town - a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy and Clive Gollings. Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes...”

Though this film wasn’t as good as the absolute genius films ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’, it was still bloody good! I thought it had a great cast who all did a great job, and the comedy was constant and solid all the way through. The ‘talking alien’ gags never got old and I found myself often laughing at his random little moments sometimes just happening in the background. This film may not be for everyone, but sci-fi and general film nerds will love the constant ‘in’ jokes from other films and tv series. I really hope people will love this as much as I did.

9 out of 10 from me.
