Movie Review – Rare Exports

The first time I saw this film it was at a press screening that only lasted 30 minutes! I went into it only knowing that it was a foreign language film and was an adult Christmas movie as, in this one, Santa was a bad guy, so I was a little surprised when the first 5-10 minutes of the film was in English.  However, after that time it switched over to other characters in the film who spoke in their native Finish, as the movie was set in Finland, but there were no subtitles! Twenty minutes later, after the screeners tried to fix the problem, handed out free ice creams, and the promoter yelling out to the crowd a description of what was happening on screen, they eventually turned it off, apologised, and said they would reschedule it. Most people seemed pretty peeved off but I had really enjoyed the movie up to that point, even though I didn’t understand what they were saying, and I looked forward to the next screening set for a few weeks later.

“On Christmas Eve in Finland, Santa Claus is unearthed in an archaeological dig. Soon after, children start disappearing, leading a boy and his father to capture Santa and, with the help of fellow hunters, look to sell him back to the corporation that sponsored the dig. And then there are Santa's elves who are determined to free their leader.”

If you ever want to see a non-English speaking film then this is the one to go to. It was just such a well made film, from the acting, writing, directing and the genuinely creepy horror scenes, although horror isn’t really the right word to describe them. If it wasn’t for the subtitles, this could easily have been mistaken for a Hollywood production, and with a very clever end that’s tied into the ambiguous title of the film, it left me with a very large grin. I fully suggest people get out to see this film!

9 out of 10 from me.
