Movie Review – The Three Musketeers

I’ve got to admit that I have a special place in my heart for Paul W.S. Anderson, even though he is seen by many as a bit of a hack for his often ‘spectacle only’ films that lack story and good characters. But, more often than not, I do really like his films, although a few have fallen very flat in my eyes. When I saw the trailer for his newest film, it didn’t exactly jump out and grab me as one of his better films. It could be said though to be his biggest budget and spectacle to date, so I was still looking forward to sitting down and watching it to see if it was going to either hit the mark, or miss it by a long shot.

“The hot-headed young D'Artagnan, along with three former legendary but now down on their luck Musketeers, must unite and defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war.”

Well, this film really couldn’t have missed the mark any more. I mean, it wasn’t a horrible film, or even a bad film, but it just had so many little things that really bugged me. It had some strange casting choices, way over the top music score, mixed dramatic themes that didn’t exactly pull me in at all, and generally a rather boring story. It also made the mistake of leaving itself very open at the end for a sequel. I’m not a fan when films are arrogant enough to do that, and seeing as this film is bombing at the box office, I doubt it will get a follow up.

6 out of 10 from me.
