Movie Review – The Tree Of Life

When going into press screenings I normally know next to nothing, unless it’s for a bigger film as then it’s much harder to ignore press and trailers that hit months in advance. With ‘The Tree Of Life’ I had already heard a lot about it, even though it wasn’t exactly a ‘big’ film, but it still had enough star actors and picked up enough mixed press, that it had caught my attention. Also, throw in a couple of people who had seen it before me and told me a few things about it, meant I went in knowing a small amount but enough to maybe skew my opinion already about the picture. So, with a decent amount of apprehension and having just come off a pretty bad film from the International Film Festival, I was really hoping this would in fact turn out to be a gem rather than a bore fest!

“The impressionistic story of a Texas family in the 1950’s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.”

Well, I can say that I fully understand why many people don’t like this film and that it’s split critics the way it has. It’s very slow paced, wanky in parts and often leaves the audience wondering what the hell is going on. But, despite all that, I loved it! Now it’s very nerdy to say I ‘got’ it, but it really did talk to me at a deeper level and because of that I got so much out of it. One particular scene, which I won’t even start to describe for fear of spoiling it, had me mesmerised and shocked, especially when some characters turned up in it that I would never, ever, have guessed would turn up in the film! Now if that hasn’t at least got you interested I don’t know what would!

9.5 out of 10 from me!
