I haven’t always been a high paid, living the high life film and DVD reviewer. Wait, I’ve never been that! Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that I’ve done the hard yards at ‘normal’ jobs over the years, and one of the those normal jobs was working many years at book stores. Now, though I may not have read a massive amount of fiction, as I’m a big non-fiction lover, but I did get a good grasp of the popular books and what was good or bad. One of those good ones was the book ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’, which funnily enough I thought was a non-fiction book about how to bring up kids. So it wasn’t till I saw the trailer for the film version of it that I found out it was actually a fiction story about a mother bringing up a very troubled kid. Not only was that a surprise, but the film looked awesome as well! So when I got my media invite for it I was pretty damn excited to check it out.

“The mother of a teenage boy who went on a high-school killing spree tries to deal with her grief - and feelings of responsibility for her child's actions.”

Tilda Swinton, the mother in the piece, was simply stunning! I had heard a lot of good things about her going into the film and it’s one of those occasions when the hype was fully realised by the performance. Sadly though the rest of the film just didn’t live up to her performance, though I’m not saying it was bad. For me the end result of what the kid was going to grow into was played too on the nose, so when it finally happened, it didn’t come as a shock, and hence the suspense was gone for me. So yes that might be exactly how the book tells the story, but for me I wish they held that back so that it came as an actual twist, rather than an inevitable end result.

7.5 out of 10 from me.
