Movie Review – Win Win

One of the main highlights for me each year is the three weeks when the New Zealand International Film Festival hits town and I get to sit back and watch dozens of great movies, back to back, day after day. After such an experience, where I’m lucky enough to see a large amount of great films, part of me feels a little ‘down’ thinking that I’ll have to wait another whole year before I get to see such great films again. However, that’s really such a misconception, as there are great films coming out all times of the year, and the IFF could easily have failed to pick up one of these great films or it fell within a timeframe of where it couldn’t be screened at the festival. So, when I got to see the film ‘Win Win’, I was so glad to find it was one of those films that made me realise that the IFF doesn’t have a monopoly on showing great films!

“Disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty, who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach, stumbles across a star athlete through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. Just as it looks like he will get a double payday, the boy's mother shows up fresh from rehab and flat broke, threatening to derail everything.”

'Win Win' was just such a damn good film! Really really funny, great acting, cool world, and awesome characters you really care about, and it’s saying a lot that it’s a cool world, as this is a ‘dramedy’ and often such things are left for the world of superhero or sci-fi epics. But, something about this world just seemed kind of cool, and with such interesting and diverse characters, it made for a bloody cool place to go and visit if I had the chance. Loved this film and it was a great little gem to come across!

9 out of 10 from me!
