19th November 2009 - As far as disaster movies go, ‘2012’ was looking to be one of the most epic of all times, with the trailers showing huge chunks of land disappearing into the ocean and tidal waves sweeping over huge mountain ranges. The concept of the year 2012 is based around the myth (or maybe it's not a myth?) that the world will come to an end in 2012, due not only to ancient Mayan prophecies, but based on other cultures prophecies as well.

So, for this movie, they picked the world shattering shifting of the magnetic poles and a concept called ‘crust displacement’ to be what brings the destruction of the world and the fulfilment of the 2012 prophecy.

The IMBD page for the film has a great short synopsis that sums up the story concept in one sentence: “An epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors”. Without talking about the actual plot, this really does sum up the movie and what you are to expect when watching it.

I’m a fan of the director, Roland Emmerich, even though his films sometimes become a bit too much of a ‘huge spectacle’ and not enough of a good story. But I thought ‘2012’ did a good job of doing both. Wait! Let me take that back!  It did a great job of the huge spectacle of world destruction, so much so, that I don’t think anything of this scale has been seen before on the big screen and done in such an incredible way. With a decent story, and some decent characters, it made for an enjoyable ‘popcorn destruction film’ with a good moral behind it as well. However, I’m sure people will come out of the film with different ideas on what that moral might be!

One last bit of advice. This is a must see at the cinema! If you plan to see this film at some stage but are thinking of waiting until it hits DVD, then you will be missing out on the epic nature of this film on the big screen. Don’t wait for the DVD, go and see it at the cinema!

7.5 out of 10 from me.

Roland Emmerich is one of

Roland Emmerich is one of the worst directrors around. Name one movie of his besides the Patriot that was actually good or didn't focus on unneccessary characters. Guess what everyone, the earth's core is already melted and there's no proof in the Mayan calendar whatsoever that the earth will end in 2012.
