When I was a kid I was an avid cartoon viewer on Saturday mornings and after school and those many hours of wasted youth turned into a love of Japanese Anime as an adult. But one show, or character, I never really got into was ‘Astro Boy’, not to say I didn’t know that the show was around, it just never interested me. However, despite this lack of earlier interest, when a large budget feature version was to be released it sparked my interest and a rather cool looking trailer helped.
“Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving man's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the father who had rejected him.”
Now being a huge Pixar fan and also a huge Anime fan this film came off as a bit of a mix of both. It had a very similar feel to Anime films although in a fully CG world, which looked amazing. The story line never reached the same levels as a well crafted Pixar film but they gave it their best shot and there were some funny scenes that worked well. Overall it was a fun ride, though not up to scratch with the current CG films that are out there, but I think it kept true to its Anime roots.
