Date Night

Steve Carell and Tina Fey by themselves are pure comedic gold, and by putting them into a film together was just asking for something amazing to happen and maybe some new form of awesome precious mineral would be created to describe how good that film would be. So with that amount of hype being bandied about by the film ‘Date Night’, the question was could it ever live up to the huge expectation that had been written about it before its release? Well checking it out was the only way I was going to be able to answer that question.

“This action comedy tells the tale of mild-mannered married couple Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey) who fear their relationship may be falling into a stale rut. During their weekly date night, they impetuously steal a dinner reservation, which leads to a case of mistaken identity. Turns out the reservation was for a pair of thieves, and now a number of unsavory characters want Phil and Claire killed. If they can survive a wacky life-threatening night, they may just rediscover the passion missing from their marriage. Directed by Shawn Levy. Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, and Kristen Wiig co-star.”

Well right off the bat I'll say yes this film lives up to the hype. It’s not the best comedy I’ve seen in recent years  - ‘Wedding Crashers’ still holds that crown in my eyes - but it was bloody solid throughout. Carell and Fey made for a very believable frustrated couple and even during the over-the-top scenes they kept it grounded in some sort of realism. Add in some great cameos and you're left with a great comedy that will be seen as one of the year’s best.

8.5 out of 10 from me.
