Dinner For Schmucks

There’s not a month that goes by where there isn’t a sequel or remake of an old classic Hollywood film, and what’s also common are remakes of overseas hits. Sometimes the Americans are so paranoid about the accents not being understood that they will happily even remake English language films into American versions. I wonder if it's just that the American audience isn’t cultured enough to accept non American accents in their big budgeted movies? However, with these remakes, one thing that is rare is when a non English spoken comedy movie is remade into a Hollywood version, as often what’s funny in one country may not work so well in the USA. ‘The Dinner Game’ was one French comedy that was picked up by Hollywood and turned into (or as they worded it ‘inspired’)‘Dinner for Schmucks’ an all star cast big budget version of the French hit.

“Tim (Paul Rudd) is a rising executive who "succeeds" in finding the perfect guest, IRS employee Barry (Steve Carell), for his boss's monthly event, a so-called "dinner for idiots," which offers certain advantages to the exec who shows up with the biggest buffoon.”

With such an all star cast and a great comedy director on board, not to mention the strong source material, you would like to think they would have tried every which way to make this a brilliant comedy. But, just as the all star ‘Grown Ups’ failed last month, I think this has done just the same and in many ways is even more disappointing than ‘Grown Ups’. Not that I think it was a better film, because it wasn’t, but because that film had a few 'B grade' comedians thrown in whereas this film had a lot of people at the top of their game. With a lot of bad writing, scenes that just didn’t make sense, and a very broad feel it just made for a sloppy film that was a lot funnier in the trailer. A first low point for Rudd, but maybe an equally as bad result for Carell as with his other stinker ‘Evan Almighty’ from a few years ago.

6.5 out of 10 from me.
