Grown Ups

Before going in to see this movie all I knew was that it had pulled in big dollars in the world wide box office, over US$200 million, and I knew it starred 5 of the biggest, and many just well known, comedy actors out there in the world today and it’s not often you get so many big names in one movie. In a way it’s what ‘The Expendables’ was for action movies and after seeing that, and liking it, I thought maybe they could also pull off a great comedy with so many big names trying to pull at your laugh strings.

“Thirty years after graduating from high school, five former basketball teammates gather at the lake house where they celebrated their biggest victory to mourn the passing of their late coach. Over the course of the 4th of July weekend, the five friends realize that just because they've all grown up and started families doesn't mean that they've lost that old spark. Adulthood is what you make of it, and no one at the lake house is eager to be the grown-up of the gang.”

‘Couples Retreat’, from last year, comes close to what this movie is like with its large ensemble cast of big name actors making a funny kind of movie, but I thought that film fell well short and, sadly, so did this film. The humour was lacking and felt very forced, and even some of the actors seemed to struggle to pull off even one joke, with Chris Rock being the worst, which was such a pity as I think he’s one of the best stand-up comedians in the world. This felt more like a film for the actors to get together and just have fun on set with the actual quality of the movie itself being an afterthought. When a film as average as this still makes so much money, it makes you wonder what lessons will ever be learnt from such films. But, it’s hard to argue with a film that makes a lot of money!

6 out of 10 from me.
