Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

July 23rd 09 - Well Harry Potter 6 was always going to be a big summer blockbuster, though seeing as it's winter in our part of the world it’s hard to still call it that. Either way,  I’m sure there were lots of people more than happy to either miss some sunny hot weather in the north to spend 2½ hours inside a cinema, or if you were like us in the south, spend that time in a warm room rather than out in the cold winter weather.

Going by the record numbers the film picked up this weekend I’d say it also had a lot more to do with it just being the next instalment of a hugely successful book and film franchise.

The film broke the USA records for biggest midnight opening gross of all time with US$22.2 million, biggest single-day worldwide gross of all time with US$236 million, and the five day record for biggest five-day worldwide gross in history of US$394 million. Now those are huge numbers showing that the world has definitely not got tired of the boy wizard.

As far as the story goes there’s not much to say other than it’s the continuation of the story of the boy wizard Harry Potter in his 6th year of magic school. Although I haven’t read the books, you get the feeling the whole time that each film really is just one part of a bigger story, to the point that it would be very hard to just pick up one of the films by itself and figure out what on earth was going on if you hadn't already seen the other films. So I find it hard to separate the films into individual parts as you really do need to have seen them all to get the full picture.

That is one of the flaws of course in these films. They keep you wanting more as they never give you a satisfactory ending. This can be a good thing, but when this is an 8 movie franchise it can be hard to take sometimes. My other dislike of the series is that it really does feel like they have taken the best bits from the book and put them up on screen. I’ve never read the books but sometimes random things happen that I’m sure the book fans will love but seem to leave me confused as to what it all means. However, those really are my only real gripes. On a different tack, I'm pleased to say that the lead actor, Daniel Radcliff, can now act!  In the first few films I found it really hard to like his style, or lack of.

All up I give this film 7.5 out of 10.

I don't think that anyone

I don't think that anyone who has not read the HP books has has the right perspective to write a review on the movies that portray them. If you had read the books you would see the serious flaws and huge gaps in the story line. For example they left out the 8 or 9 people that die in the epic battle at the end of the book, how are they going to explain there absence in the last movies or are they just going to pretend they didn't die. I would suggest if you can sit through a 3+ hour long movie about Harry Potter you must be a big enough fan to read the books. Give them a chance and see if your review doesn't change.

I feel an overwhelming need

I feel an overwhelming need to state the obvious: a book is a book and a film is a film. It's one of the great strengths of books as an art form that they have room to accommodate numerous characters and plots. Films do not. But they can, arguably with far greater impact, explore couple of themes. Given the time constraints - three hours max for a film versus, what, 6 plus for a book, what do you expect?
A film can only ever be a summary of a book. Try to keep all the detail and you end up with something like Watchmen, which crammed in all the plot of the graphic novel, but at the expense of giving viewers characters we gave a shit about. If the Potter flicks can elicit the excitement, mystery and wonder of the books, and must sacrifice a few peripheral hobgoblins to do that, well double flashing thumbs up with bells on, I say.

I completely agree with

I completely agree with HPFAN4LIFE the movie was absolute RUBBISH!!!
Having read all the books in the series I can appreciate that linking all the movies together is a necessary thing....but there are jus certain things you cannot leave out...as mentioned before by HPFAN4LIFE...the final battle scene in the book....that MADE THE BOOK!!! people died!!! and they COMPLETELY left that out...I mean c'mon they made it look like everyone in the castle was sleeping and they woke up and found Dumbledore dead outside...
Another thing...what was with Harry jus standing there and watching Dumbledore die?????!!!! and not doing anything until they were almost in the forest?!! I mean earlier in the movie he was zapping Malfoy for cursing a girl...and then he just watches as Bellatrix and the other death eaters walk away...WTF?!!! David Yates needs to be SHOT. Seriously...How can you change crucial moments such as these? and then expect fans of the book to watch that crap...

The movie was disappointing.

The movie was disappointing. Come on, being the director doesn't give you rights(maybe it does) to tamper with a hugely successful book. The Climax was the most disappointing part. How else can you account for the "Shh don't talk in the Class" kinda action from Severus Snape when Dumbledore is about to be killed. How can the memories of Voldemort be limited to just 2? I am sure none'd've missed anything if they had pruned the "romantic" episodes.
How does Harry find about the other Horcruxes? Only the next installment will tell.
I'll give a 3 on 10 and both thumbs down

Having not read the books I

Having not read the books I will have to respect all your opinions but as I said I'm not reviewing the book I'm reviewing the movie. So purely as a movie goes I thought it was really good but even then I could tell some major things were missing as it wasn't perfect story wise. But I will add one thing...heaps more people died in the end battle!?! I would have loved to have seen that in the film! Because the film series could do with an epic battle with serious deaths and drama.

david yates should nt

david yates should nt continue. whole movie was a total waste.

I really hope... by means

I really hope... by means REALLY REALLY hope that the director of HP movie David Yates shouldn't continue as the last movie was really abysmal. I think the fourth movie was the best of all and I hope that the fourth movie Director should continue to direct the movie..
For David Yates: The ending was really horrified...
Come on... Does Aragod funeral seems more important than Dumbledore's funeral?????
You have failed to direct this series... Honestly..

the movie is alll

the movie is alll rubbish..............................with no because till now i havent seen te movie
