How To Train Your Dragon

With an absolute glut of computer animated films these days, it’s really hard for some films to stick out from the crowd. Often it’s the simple fact of being made by a studio that has made a past hit which can get people through the door, such as Pixar, whose name alone demands you to buy a ticket to their latest offering of gold film making. Pretty much the only other outfit that can do that is DreamWorks Animation SKG with past huge hits being the Shrek series, Madagascar series and Kung Fu Panda. So with their latest offering, ‘How To Train Your Dragon’, being a 3D spectacle it was always going to draw a big crowd and compete with Pixar’s films as the year’s best animated film.

“A hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed.”

Now going into this film was really by chance as I was meant to see another film instead. But by the time I went to buy my ticket, due to it being school holidays, the movie had already been going 15 minutes as the queue was so long. As I was in the queue looking at the board and watching the minutes tick by, I saw they had a non-3D screening of the film ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ that was going to start at a better time for me. I had seen the trailer and thought it looked good.  Well  the whole 3D thing doesn’t hold such a huge appeal over me since seeing ‘Avatar’, which so deserved the 3D treatment, so I thought I'd see it instead as I was already amped to see a movie anyway. Well I’m glad I did!

This was by far one of the better animated films out in the market and easily competes with Pixar. It had great action, a great story and really great characters. The animation was just right for the style they went for, and even though I’m sure 3D would have added something else to the mix, I don’t think it was necessary. This will thrill children and adults alike and perfect for the school holidays!

8.5 out of 10 from me.
