Kickass

Super hero films are another genre that are a ‘dime-a-dozen’ these days coming from Hollywood studios. One sub-genre within the comic book films that has been more prevalent since the success of the darker themed Batman relaunch, is the dark comic book movie. Movies such as ‘Watchman’ taking audiences on a very different ride than they are used to, was always going to create an appetite for more such movies. With ‘Kickass’ being based on a highly popular comic series with a very dark and comedic take on the world of costumed heroes, it didn’t take a brain surgeon to see that one day it would be turned into a film.

“Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan with a few friends and who lives alone with his father. His life is not very difficult and his personal trials not that overwhelming. However, one day he makes the simple decision to become a super-hero even though he has no powers or training.”

With such a simple premise you almost wonder why no one had thought of it before but what this film does is take that simple idea and just delivers a knockout punch. With a great cast, including well known actors such as Nicolas Cage and a whole host of newbies, every person dived into their role full force and produced some very memorable characters and performances. This film was very dark but not in the way most people would think of a dark film. It had high drama in places but most of the darkness came from the fact that these were real people with no powers fighting crime. So when someone got shot or stabbed then they got really hurt! Mix in a great amount of humour and it made for one hell of a ride!

8.5 out of 10 from me!
