This Is It

November 5th 2009 - After Michael Jackson passed away there was a lot of talk about what would become of his show and the 50 sold out dates that he was meant to have performed. Then news quickly spread that there were hundreds of hours of rehearsals and behind-the-scenes footage and of the huge preparation that was going into it.

All it took then was a few legal documents to be signed, and suddenly it was announced that a feature film was going to be released of this footage and edited into something resembling what the final show would have looked like if Michael had  made it to the stage. This film was going to be called ‘This Is It’.

I was in two minds from the beginning whether I wanted to see this movie at the cinema or if I should just wait until it came out on DVD. I’m a Jackson fan but honestly didn’t see a major reason to see this movie straight away. I knew I would see it, but it was a matter of when rather than if. Then when my flatmates decided to go I thought I might as well see it and then it could be my next review, killing two birds with one stone so to speak. After seeing the movie though I’m so glad I saw it at the cinema!

In what can only be described as ‘eye opening’ you get to see the genius that is Michael Jackson. Whenever he opened his mouth I almost cringed expecting him to do or say something strange, but every time he did he knew exactly what needed to be done to make the song or performance better.  You could instantly see the results as they rehearsed those bits again and every time he was spot on with the improvement. This man really was a musical genius, and even in these rough versions of the songs and dance numbers I still found myself with tears in my eyes during one song and at least two other songs had me mesmerised and covered in goose bumps.

This is very much a big screen film and I suggest everyone who is a fan of Jackson gets out there to see it.

8 out of 10 from me.
