Monsters

It’s getting harder and harder to make it as a film maker these days and it’s the cheapness of the technology, to a degree, that’s causing this. It’s not just a matter of there being more people doing it, but it’s more because there are some amazingly talented people out there who can afford to spend the money on amazing cameras, edit suites and computer graphic systems, and if they can also tell a great story then they can blow you out of the water with their skill and talent. The maker of ‘Monsters’ is one of these people who has made an incredibly low budget film that looks like a Hollywood blockbuster. Gone are the days when a low budget film maker can make an impact in the world of film with just a camera and a few good actors, as flashy CG and amazing visuals is now the key to getting known, and like I said, if you can also tell a great story then you are onto a massive winner!

“Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life form began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures"...... Our story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.”

This film was simply brilliant! Taking out the fact that I knew it was super low budget, and was a ‘one man band’ type of film, it was just brilliantly made from the story and acting through to the alien action sequences that were both massively impressive and creepily effective. It was a very personal story, while at the same time injecting elements of a much bigger world and story, and with a great ending it left you wanting to see and know a lot more. Simply a great film!

9 out of 10 from me.
