Year One

‘Year One’ is a comedy brought to us by the prolific comedy producer and film maker, Judd Apatow. Just last week I had seen the film ‘Funny People’, which he directed, so I was looking forward to this film as the trailer had looked really good. But looks can be deceiving as they say!

‘Year One’ is directed by Harold Ramis, one of the original members of the ‘Ghost Buster’ movies, and he also had a small role in the film. The film stars Jack Black and Michael Cera, and features Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Hank Azaria.

“Zed (Jack Black) is a hunter and Oh (Michael Cera) is a gatherer. After being informed that Zed ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, the shaman banishes him from the tribe. Oh decides to go with Zed on his journey to find the end of the Earth.”

The story itself intertwines through different biblical stories including Cain and Abel, Abraham and Isaac and the city of Sodom. It really is meant to be the first ever road trip movie set in biblical times.

I was expecting a lot from this film as it had a great cast and some great people behind the scenes but I couldn’t help but come out of the film feeling a little disappointed. There were lots of great little comedy bits and Michael Cera was the standout performance, but overall it felt a little weak and disjointed. In fact I think the directing was the worst thing about the film as so many things didn’t feel like they had been shot right.
Despite the fact that I did enjoy the film, it was still rather disappointing as I was expecting so much from it.

Overall it was a good film but could have been so much better. 6.5 out of 10 from me.
