Movie Review - UP

‘UP’ is Pixar’s 10th film and 10th big hit in a row, which makes Pixar an absolute oddity in the film world as no other company, actor or director has ever achieved such a feat. Four or five big hits in a row is really unusual let alone 10!  ‘UP’ is the second feature film from Pixar director, Pete Doctor, who directed the other smash hit film ‘Monsters Inc’.

“The film centers around a grumpy old man named Carl Fredricksen and an over eager Wilderness Explorer named Russell who fly to South America in a floating house suspended from helium balloons”.  This synopsis gives the basic theme behind the plot but hardly scratches the surface of this story which starts with a young boy meeting the love of his life, their long life together, and his eventual journey through the skies as he tries to fulfill the dreams of his dead wife. In fact even that doesn’t really do the story justice.

First off I'll say that no film has ever made me cry within the first 10 minutes before! Yet this film did that. I watched it with a near full audience and people were deathly quiet as the sad story unfolded on the screen. That was only the beginning though as we were taken on a long journey from his little house in America to the wild uncharted areas of South America.

Tagging along, unexpectedly, was a young boy called Russell and along the way they also picked up a couple of others including the funniest character in the movie, Doug.  Doug is a dog that can speak with the help of a collar which verbalises what he’s thinking, making for some very funny scenes and one-liners.

All up I think this is the best Pixar movie yet and gets a mighty 9.5 out of 10 from me.
