Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Billy 'Dr.Manhattan' Crudup - it's certainly a cast to die for. Mix in the snazzy dress suits and non-stop gangster warfare spilling out into the streets and you've got yourself the makings of a blockbuster.

We haven't seen too many good gangster movies about hoodlums and heroes from the 'public enemy' era (1931-1935). The Untouchables in 1987 was set around this time and if I recall, was a decent movie but that's about it. So, it's relatively fresh material as far as mainstream movie-goers are concerned which is great because I don't know about you, but I'm getting a little concerned about all the comic book and action figure movie adaptations lately. You wouldn't be wrong in thinking that the writers had run out of things to write about.

Johnny Depp plays bad boy John Dillinger with Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis and Billy Crudup as J Edgar Hoover. My knowledge of american gansters isn't the best and I've heard of both Dillinger and Hoover - but I've never heard of Melvin Purvis. A quick search around the internet tells me that he led the manhunts to track down Dillinger and his accomplice, 'Baby Face Nelson' and was also responsible for capturing and killing 'Pretty Boy Floyd'. So we're set to see the characters of Depp and Bale go head to head in this movie which is exciting stuff!

Produced by Michael Mann who has been involved in his fair share of big movies including Hancock, Miami Vice and The Aviator. With a strong cast and a producer with alot of experience making hit movies, Public Enemies looks set to do well.

Public Enemies releases in New Zealand on the 30th of July. Thanks to Think Hero for the quality trailer.
