It's Star Trek, but not as we know it. Star Trek 2009 is on its way and the biggest question I have is whether or not the new era of Star Trek will deliver? With the legions of Trekkies already frothing at the mouth after the announcement that the movie was being pushed back to May of this year (slated for an original release date of December 25, 2008) here's hoping that it's not another case of too much hype and nothing much else on release day.

As for being a hardcore Trekkie, well, I think I'm more of a Star Wars fan when it comes down to it but after being starved of anything good at the movies on the sci-fi side of things for a while, I'm betting that there are more than a few sci-fi fans hoping Star Trek 2009 won't be a disappointment.

With a closer look at the cast (early rumours suggested Matt Damon would be playing Kirk) for this movie, it looks like director J.J Abrams (Cloverfield, Lost, Alias) seems to be on the money so far with the casting choices. Zachary Quinto (who actually looks alot like a vulcan even without the prosthetics) from Heroes looks great as the young 'Spock' and I was thrilled to see our very own Karl Urban being cast as the young 'Bones' - which is just cool . The other casting choices also seem pretty solid with Eric Bana taking on the villain's role of 'Nero'. I think he'll be great in the role but I guess time will tell.

May 2009 is the tentative US release date so fingers-crossed there won't be any more unscheduled delays. Damn, now I just can't get that infernal song 'Star Trekkin' by The Firm out of my head...
