We haven't had the pleasure of seeing Viggo Mortensen on the big screen since his gritty and realistic depiction of a Russian mobster in 'Eastern Promises' released in 2007. And I've always thought Viggo to be a fine actor. So upon perusing the movies releasing this year, I was quite happy to discover his latest movie comes from the sci-fi genre and looks promising.

'The Road' is based on the novel of the same name by author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) and follows the journey of a father and son who travel across a 'post-apocalyptic landscape some years after a great, unexplained cataclysm.' On their journey together they discover the horrors of the aftermath - plants do not grow, civilization has been destroyed and most species have become extinct. What is left of humanity now exists in the form of ravenous cannibals and refugee travelers scavenging for food.

'The Road' also stars Charlize Theron, another talented actress and along-side Viggo, there's not alot that could go wrong with this movie. The novel was also awarded the Pulitzer prize for fiction and seems like it would be well worth hunting down to read.

We're looking at an unconfirmed release date of Feb 2010 for 'The Road'.
