Ai Weiwei:Never Sorry and From Up On Poppy Hill
Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
These days’ documentaries connect and talk to me more than any other genre. I see some amazing films in any given year, and without a doubt, documentaries often make up more than half of them. So when I saw the trailer for this film, and despite knowing nothing about the subject matter before hand, I instantly knew this was a film I had to see.
I'm not sure if it was because I was hung over from a big night before, and feeling a little seedy, but I found myself constantly tearing up during 'Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry'. The main reason though was because it's an important film, which of course is bandied about often, but this one really is. For any free thinking individuals of the world, you should check out this awesome documentary about the outspoken and controversial Chinese artist Ai Weiwei! Simply brilliant!
A++ From Me!!!
From Up On Poppy Hill
People are funny sometimes, and not in a good way. They see that an animated foreign film is playing at a festival, and without doing any research about it, they drag their young kids along. When the film starts, and the subtitles stretch across the screen, the audible child groans spread like wildfire. So that didn’t get things off to a good start.
Sadly this is another Studio Ghibli miss, as it nearly put me to sleep. Sure I was tired anyway, but I also picked up on the fidgety and board energy around me, as my section of the audience seemed to be in agreement with me. Its storytelling felt episodic, and so gave the impression there was no strong thru story, and instead just a bunch of different story elements playing out blandly. But it did have a few good laughs along the way.
