New Zealand performer Patrice Tipoki has been selected from hundreds of applicants aspiring to play the lead role of Elphaba in the musical WICKED in Australia. Patrice will share the role of the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West with Jemma Rix.
The role of Elphaba is both physically and emotionally demanding and is considered one of the most vocally challenging roles in musical theatre. Being cast as Elphaba is a huge achievement and a testament to Patrice's exceptional talent.
WICKED Australia Co-Producer John Frost said, "We are thrilled to welcome Patrice into the role of Elphaba. She is a sensational talent and as we've seen before she is more than capable of rising to the challenge of this role."
Patrice was the understudy for Elphaba during the Melbourne season, performing the role many times during the 13 month run, then left to have a baby. She has now returned to play the lead, one of the most sought after roles in musical theatre, for the remainder of the Sydney season of WICKED.
"I am absolutely thrilled to be back on stage in WICKED and performing the role of Elphaba," Patrice said. "WICKED is such a spectacular musical and the character Elphaba is a dream role for any musical theatre performer. The journey she goes on throughout the show is so special and moving, and her extraordinary friendship with Glinda resonates with audiences all around the world. It is a real honour to be trusted with this role and to be performing with the sensational WICKED cast once again."
Patrice's rich history of music and culture stems from her Maori/Irish background. From an early age her love for music was fostered in a musical family. With training in voice, violin, piano, saxophone and dance she became one of youngest graduates from WAAPA. Patrice has toured and performed extensively throughout Europe, USA, Asia and the Middle East. She has also signed with Sony BMG and recently spent time writing, recording, filming and touring. Patrice starred as Nala in Disney's The Lion King, has performed in We Will Rock You, understudying the three female leads and performing Killer Queen and Scaramouche many times. Patrice's natural ability to entertain, along with her world class vocal range and dedication to her art provides a perfect recipe for success and longevity.
WICKED has recently celebrated its one millionth patron, and this week reaches nine months at Sydney's Capitol Theatre.
