Rotorua's 10th anniversary Wearable Creationz will be the biggest yet with a record 74 entries from around the central North Island.
Entries for the 2012 event, which have now closed, are spread across five categories - youth, enviro art, group, culture and corporate - with hundreds of people involved in creating this year's showpieces, some as individuals and others in groups.
"This will be our biggest year so far, it's fantastic," said Barbara Cook, chairwoman of the Rotorua Creative Art Trust which organises the popular annual extravaganza.
Entrants will be vying for first, second and third in each category with the Harvey World Travel Rotorua, Singapore Airlines and Holland America Supreme Award selected from the five category winners.
The event includes a matinee show on Thursday, August 16, a gala night on Friday, August 17 and the awards night on Saturday, August 18.
Mrs Cook says there are still tickets and tables left for all three shows but they are selling quickly and those keen to secure a table or seat should get in fast.
A reconfiguration of the layout at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre where Wearable Creations will be held means an extra grandstand can be used, providing 1200 more seats. Capacity crowds of 3000 are expected at each show.
"We've had sell-outs every year, it's always an incredible show," Mrs Cook says. "It's become one of the big nights out in Rotorua for many people.
"The calibre of entries has stepped up every year and we have people who have been models in previous years now entering their own designs."
The matinee is Mrs Cook's favourite of the three shows. Special guests include hundreds of the city's elderly folk and primary school children.
A hat competition is held for the senior citizens with the best designs shown on stage for a winner to be selected while the children have a colouring competition.
"We used to have a daytime dress rehearsal and we needed an audience - the matinee show evolved from that. It is a wonderful occasion, a lot of fun," Mrs Cook said.
Along with the hundreds of special guests, there are also tickets on sale for the matinee.
Tickets to all three shows can be purchased through Ticketmaster, online or at the Rotorua Convention Centre.
