Rotorua Rocks To Raggamuffin

Events & Venues Rotorua general manager Peter McLeod has confirmed that the popular Raggamuffin music festival will be back in Rotorua in the summer of 2011 and 2012, bringing new line-ups of top local and international artists.

Mr McLeod said discussions were also underway with the event promoters about the possibility of Raggamuffin being signed up beyond 2012 and he was optimistic this could be achieved for Rotorua given Saturday's highly successful Raggamuffin 2010.

In one of the biggest events ever staged in the city, more than 30,000 fans descended on the Rotorua International Stadium on Saturday (23 January) for eight hours of reggae, hip hop, soul and dub music provided by a star-studded line-up.

International acts included Lauryn Hill, Sean Kingston, Shaggy, Sly & Robbie, Julian Marley and Steel Pulse, along with New Zealand performers Katchafire, Sola Rosa & Iva Lankum, Sweet & Irie, and House of Shem.

Mr McLeod said the highlight for both organisors and performers was the incredibly enthusiastic response from fans to the different acts. He said the crowd had been "brilliant and very well behaved", with very little trouble to be seen anywhere.

"Ragga fans turned up with happy faces ready to have a good time and the good vibes stayed throughout the entire show. The smiles were still there hours later as people filed out of the stadium following a lively onstage finale by Jamaican-American reggae star Shaggy.

"There's no doubt the event reinforced Rotorua as the reggae capital of New Zealand and it's boosted Raggamuffin's reputation amongst international reggae artists as a 'must do' event.

"We were also very pleased with the food, beverage and toilet arrangements provided this year. The village on our No 2 ground at the international stadium was very popular and while there was the expected pressure on some facilities and services from time-to-time, they coped extremely well with demand given the large number of people in attendance.

"However we won't be resting on our laurels and we're planning a full debrief with all parties so we can continue to improve on arrangements for future events.

Mr McLeod paid tribute to Rotorua residents for the welcome they extended to the thousands of out-of-town visitors attending the festival.

"The spirit of manaakitanga was alive and well in the city last weekend, that's for sure. We know that an event of this size can be intrusive for some, especially people living close to the stadium, and we certainly appreciate their tolerance and the support they've shown.

"Raggamuffin is really great for our city. It injects millions of dollars into our local economy, so support from Rotorua residents for this annual event is highly valued and appreciated by organisers and festival attendees alike."

"Staging a festival of this size is a very demanding task but it's certainly rewarding when we see 30,000 people coming together in such a positive atmosphere and getting so much enjoyment out of a wonderful world class music festival in a great venue.

"It certainly makes the hard work and the logistical effort seem worthwhile, and we'll be doing everything we possibly can to ensure Raggamuffin stays in our city for the foreseeable future.

"Well done Rotorua."

Ive been to all 3 Raggamuffins and I agree this one wasnt the best although House of Shem, Julian Marley, Steel Pulse and Lauryn Hill were all Awesome. Id like to see Innercircle, Ziggy Marley, Ali Cambell, Aswad, Toots n the Maytals and maybe the wailers for next year theres so many out there Rebel Souljahs, Jimmy Cliff, Eddy Grant, Rita Marley,Third World, Ritchie Spice and for a local line up House of Shem and 1814 without a Doubt with Sons of Zion and Katchafire but yeah...RASTA...

I AGREE!!! Iv been to the

I AGREE!!! Iv been to the 1st raggamuffin and that was MEAN can still remember the atmosphere and all(Yehh mon') & last years raggamuffin 2009 was not so great highlights were House of Shem & Lauryn Hill of course. The bands need to be mixed up,not all home 1st then international afterwards.(MIX DEM UP!) Aswad would be really Awsome and some hawaiian island reggae bands Rebal Souljahz, Kolohe Kai, Maoli and all of the above(rootsman). Reggaemuffin needs to top 2007 RAGGAMUFFIN for sure...Bring it on

Raggamuffin has just become

Raggamuffin has just become better every year!! (apart from a few sound issues..ooops) Big ups to all the organizers, Rotorua and Big Big ups to Steel Pulse & Julian Marley for blessing Aotearoa with their presence!! Steel Pulse in nz was unbelievable and any Marley is also a blessing. Our only real issue is the late notice of the date about the whole event, apart from that another GREAT success :)
(A bit earlier this year please :))
My family & i have also been every year and LOVE IT!! (& there's a lot of us)
The top international artists we would love to see would be Steel Pulse(again), Aswad, Third World, or any of the Marley whanau.
Any one else is icing on the cake :)
Local artists we'd love to see includes DavidGrace &Injustice, Steel Burning, 1814 and again, any one else is just great!! :)
Theres been a lot of whispers next year Raggas was down the South Island and on Reo FM they're saying Auckland?? So its great to know its still in vegas (Rotorua).
I could go on & on about Raggamuffin but i wouldnt be able to stop writing so all i'll say is RAGGAMUFFIN 2010 ROTORUA YEEYAAAAA!!!

I have been to all 3

I have been to all 3 Raggamuffins, cant wait for next year, but definately need to get some better bands, Sean Kingston was ok, Lauren was awesome... Shaggy we dont really need him singing again...
i would so love to see Rebel Souljah, Kolohe Kai, Sons of Zion, 1814, Three House Down, UB40 would be great to get again, even tho theyre not togeather anymore... think use need bands that havent played raggaz before.... BUT WOULD SOOO LOVE TO SEE KOLOHE KAI AND SONS OF ZION

.. choice. this is the only

.. choice. this is the only info i've found confirming Ragamuffin staying in Vegas. It's a nice drive in from anywhere in the North Island., and the ragga vibe starts once we get over the bombay hills..and out of Auckland. Would love to see Ali Campbell back again. Ragga gets better every year.. but last year the stallholders ran out of food, and the carpark exits way toooo slow.. But the people the music and Rotovegas make this the best!! music festival in Aotearoa.

Kia Ora, I really enjoyed

Kia Ora, I really enjoyed Ruggamuffin 2010 MEAN. Some small downsides to the 2010 rugamuffin was that Shaggy should not have been the closing act - everyone was leaving during his peformance, an announcement or signange/maps where the busess are departing from the stadium and maybe confirming the 2011 dates durring august so that people can start booking accomadation before they all run out (happened to me at this ruggamuffin)other than that it was awesome. It would be Primo if the organisers can get bands such as BLACK SLATE and THIRD WORLD which is my first choice, then JIMMY CLIFF, ASWARD and 1814. Man that would be a mean line up to include those bands please please please pleeease. Ta thanks, J

I feel this year was not

I feel this year was not great at all I went mostly to see Lauryn Hill and she didnt even perform for that Long Shaggy is like old news now you dont see or hear much people playing his music anymore Lauryn Hills Music will always Inspire, but I must say it wsa still alright. But I think you should have a different range with the alcohol cause I heard alot of People Moaning about that there was only beer and Wine which not much are into these days. Hopefully you will listen to all the advise that use are being given so that alot more people will go from the concert happy, It is a great event and I think alot more people will go.

Haven't been to Raggamuffin

Haven't been to Raggamuffin yet - but want to come this year. I'm an old school reggae listener so I'd love to see Jimmy Cliff and also the Wailers - saw them in the mid 80's with Junior Marvin.

Would love to see some of the older lady reggae artists like Judy Mowatt, Rita Marley or Lucy Clark.

My daughter would come if KOLOHE KAI came and I would be right in front of her!!!

Seen 1814 locally here in Papakura - awesome show. I'd love to see them again too:-)

I'm really looking forward to my first Raggamuffin.
