Similan Islands and Mrs Germany

When traveling long term a girl has to earn a crust (lets face it the NZ dollar doesn’t do much). After making some subtle enquiries I found out that Mrs. Germany (yes Mrs.) was in town and diving off the Similan Islands. The Phuket Post was looking for freelance writers and if I was clever I could kill three birds with one stone (go diving, write an article and earn some cash).

The Similan Islands are considered to be one of the top ten dive sites in the world. The average depth is 60 feet and is full of rock formations, coral reefs and swarms of tropical fish. Sea Bees does a day trip from Koh Lak for $144NZD (snorkeling price) or $244NZD for 2 full dives. The price includes hotel pick up and breakfast and lunch. The story was organized and the weather was perfect. Nervously I waited and as the boat set sail, it slowly dawned on me that Mrs. Germany wasn’t even onboard. She apparently wanted to check her emails instead. So there I was in the beautiful Andaman Sea with no story, there was nothing to do but take advantage off all the free time and go for a snorkel. The under water world around the Similian Islands is truly phenomenal. A guide pointed out unique and rare fish and time passed quickly. I should say that the story wasn’t a total loss. A camera crew, underwater film team and the two runners up from a German beauty contest were also onboard and only too happy to answer questions.

When we arrived back at the Koh Lak pier, Mrs Germany was onshore waiting for her interview, so I scored two stories in one.
