5 AUGUST 2009 Exclusive Special 2009 58th ANNUAL MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT VIBE - Monday 24 August, 7.30pm In 1983, Lorraine Downes became the first, and last, New Zealand contestant to take home the Miss Universe crown.
Can Katie Taylor break our 26 year losing streak? This August, the most beautiful women from all over the globe will compete for the coveted title of Miss Universe in the world's most publicised beauty pageant, held this year in the Bahamas. Representing New Zealand in 2009 will be Katie Taylor, who beat out the other hopefuls in April this year to become 2009 Miss Universe New Zealand.
The 24 year-old beauty queen plans to take her message to go ahead and live life to the fullest all the way to the Bahamas, and perhaps meet pageant owner Donald Trump in the process. Katie is 24, 5ft 9 and graduated from Auckland University with a Bachelor of Property last year. She is now working as a construction project manager. She is a qualified pilot, and despite growing up with 3 brothers and working in a predominantly male industry, she considers herself a "girlie girl".
If she wins Miss Universe, Katie is looking forward to travelling the world for a year, helping charities and experiencing other cultures. Join Vibe for exclusive coverage of the 2009 58TH ANNUAL MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT - the ultimate tribute to beauty, swimwear and world peace!
New Zealand Premiere! ORANGUTAN ISLAND 2 ANIMAL PLANET - Tuesdays from 25 August, 9.30pm Orangutan Island is back and our 32 orphaned orangutans are in for some big changes. Lone Droscher-Nielsen, project manager of the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre proposes an open border between Palas and the Orangutan Island, enabling the older orangutans to live with the younger orphans. The hope is that the Palas Island elders will nurture and teach the youngsters, however, this is a risky experiment that could also endanger the progress made toward creating a strong Orangutan society able to survive in the true wild. Before long, limited island sanctuaries will force Lone to face even more tough decisions including moving all the orangutans to another island and merging them with a third community. * This is a NHNZ production - New Zealand Series Producer, Judith Curran.
First Time on MGM STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979) MGM - Friday 28 August, 8.30pm The original crew of the Starship Enterprise from the 1960s TV show is reunited in this dramatic, science fiction epic, the very first Star Trek feature film. A mysterious cloud-like object is heading for Earth and destroying everything in its path. The only ship in range is the newly refurbished USS Enterprise, so Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner), formerly a captain, is called upon to collect his old crewmates in order to intercept the enemy and save the world. When the original television series was cancelled in 1969, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry lobbied Paramount to continue the franchise through a feature film. The success of the series in syndication convinced the studio to begin work on a feature film in 1975. Paramount was disappointed with the scripts they were delivered so they scrapped the project in 1977. However, the box office success of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Wars convinced Paramount to revisit the idea of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and in 1978, Paramount assembled the largest press conference held at the studio since the 1950s to announce that Oscar-winning director Robert Wise (West Side Story, Star!, The Andromeda Strain, The Hindenburg) would helm the $15 million film. Nominated for three Oscars (Best Art-Set Direction, Visual Effects, Original Score) and a Golden Globe (Score). Starring: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols. "With excellent special effects and witty nods to the old series, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE set a new standard in sci-fi films--and paved the way for a host of excellent sequels." - Rotten Tomatoes
