JAMES MAY ON THE MOON DOCUMENTARY CHANNEL - Monday 29 March, 8.30pm

Top Gear presenter (and space buff) James May dons his space suit and sets off on a fascinating journey to discover the stories of the heroes behind the moon landings as he commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon landings. As a child James May dreamt of being an astronaut. He can clearly remember gathering around the television with his family, watching the flickering pictures from the surface of the moon. And while his sisters didn't stay for too long, James became fascinated by these pioneers of engineering whose extraordinary ingenuity led to man's conquest of the moon.

The Moon landing, says May, "is one of the most vivid memories of my childhood. I was six, and at 2.00am I was taken into the sitting room. There was my mum and dad, grandparents, big sister, aunts and uncles. And whenever I watch the footage now, I can still see all the details and people in that room, the wallpaper and the old telly, and I can sense the tension in the air."

Driven by a passion for technology, May seeks out the astronauts and the engineering heroes of the space race, the few who flew and built the machines that may be man's greatest technological achievement. With his unique brand of humour, James charts the stories of space travel's true heroes - from Robert Goddard, the father of rocket design to the men who walked on the moon themselves. And in a series of immersive stunts, James finds out which rockets have stood the test of time - and which are now consigned to the moon-dust bin of engineering shame. Finally James discovers what's next in the space race as NASA prepares to return to the moon. Quirky and original, James May on the Moon takes an alternative tour through man's obsession with space exploration
