The Ups And Downs Of Being A Female Wrestling Fan

I'm your typical 21 year old female - I have a boyfriend, I love shopping and clothes and I love going out on the town. But there's one thing that sets me apart from other girls my age - I love wrestling.

My name is Megan and I'm a new blogger to Voxy.co.nz. Like I said, I'm 21 and I live in Auckland.

I am a fanatical World Wrestling Entertainment fan (otherwise known as the WWE). It's not something most girls my age would be into, but I'm not like other girls.

Let's start with how I got into wrestling. I became a full time fan of the WWE in January 2007. I did watch briefly before that, back in the days when Stone Cold Steve Austin's feud with Vince McMahon ruled the wrestling world. I was about 11 or so. But wrestling was hard to get hold of back then and soon my interest died out. My mother, however, also a wrestling fan, continued to watch. Whenever we went to my grandmother's house, she would talk wrestling with my grandmother and uncle, who also were fans. I was getting sick of not knowing what they were talking about, so I decided I wanted to watch it too.

After we got home from my grandmother's one weekend, I sat down with my Mum to watch Smackdown, and the rest is history. I was hooked. Now I am a huge fanatical fan - I own 63 WWE DVDs, I have numerous posters on my walls and in July, I will have seen the WWE live twice at the Vector Arena. Expect a review of Raw live in July after the show.

Anyway, being female and being a wrestling fan is a strange combination, at least, for many guys. I always get strange looks whenever I mention I like wrestling, like I'm not allowed to like it because I'm a girl.

Take for example, when I went to buy one of my many DVDs at Kmart - I went up to the counter and handed over the DVD. The guy behind the counter looked at me strangely, and went to get the DVD from the drawers. When he came back, he said to me "So, you buying this DVD for your brother or your Dad?" as he scanned it. I just stared at him for a second, then replied "It's for me" - the look he gave me in return seriously said "Are you serious?!". I don't think he believed that a very short, blonde girl wearing a miniskirt could be a fan of wrestling.

It's stuff like that that gets on my nerves. But it gets worse. Last June, my Mum, my uncle and I went to see Smackdown and ECW live at the Vector Arena. We had pretty good seats and the atmosphere was electric and I was so excited to see all my favourite superstars in person. Our seats were in a section surrounded by males - guys my age, older guys and little kids. Everybody was looking at me and my Mum as we went to our seats. We were sitting on the same row as lots of little kids, and we could even hear them saying "What are they doing here?" And a couple of guys my age were sitting below us and they kept looking at me incredulously. I couldn't help thinking "I probably know more about wrestling then you do," because I think I'm pretty knowledgeable about the world of WWE.

But it's not all bad being a female WWE fan, because sometimes guys are impressed at what I know about it. I've had some quiz me on the WWE and I give them all correct answers and they're impressed.

If you're a girl and you like wrestling, you may feel alone in the world, but don't worry there is quite a few of us out there! There's a community of female wrestling fans on Livejournal, who are all dedicated and knowledgeable.

So, anybody, next time you see a girl who likes wrestling, don't think that she knows nothing, because she may know more then you do!

Wow, I'm sorry but you're deff not the only girl who likes wrestling. You're making it sound like you are. What were you fuckin isolated? Honestly. Do you live in like an igloo tribe? This blog is pathetic. Please just remove it. Ive been to plenty of shows and have no problem talking to guys about wrestling. They don't think its weird. Honestly do you even watch, wrestling. When you look in the crowd what do you see? not JUST men, but women too. GOODNESS!So go back to your damn tribe. Stop wasting your time with these pathetic blogs no one cares about.

Kay, thanks. Looking forward to more of your blogs...NOT.

PS. I live in a house,in the United States!

What the hell is wrong with

What the hell is wrong with you? I never said that there were no other female wrestling fans in the world o_O

I even said at the end of the post:

"If you're a girl and you like wrestling, you may feel alone in the world, but don't worry there is quite a few of us out there!"

So I have no idea where you got that from o_O

And I live in New Zealand, wrestling wasn't that big of a thing over here until recently. Maybe I should have made that clear. Maybe in the USA, there's loads of female WWE fans but when I went to the show in NZ, there wasn't that many at all.

And you're being incredibly rude, I am not going to take down my post because you say I should.

And I even know some girls who feel the same way as I do... so what's your point?

Leighanne, please read the

Leighanne, please read the entire thing before ripping her a new asshole next time, ok hun?

I loved this, it captures Nz

I loved this, it captures Nz FEMALE wrestling fans really well, i had the same problem too, people would think i was crazy and kept going on about how it was fake and how much it sucked.

Anyone with half a brain knows that The US is way ahead of us when it comes to the newest trends, of course theres more female fans over there!

Hi Megan, Was just wondering

Hi Megan,

Was just wondering if I could have permission to use some of your comments here in a piece I'm writing for a UK wrestling magazine. I'm currently writing a piece on female wrestling fans and personalities, and your views here would make a great addition to the piece.

Many thanks

Phil

Hi Phil, this is Megan who wrote the blog post. You can definitely use my comments in the article, go ahead! I hope you show me the article when it's done! I'd love to see more exposure for female wrestling fans.

My roommate in college used

My roommate in college used to like WWF. This was back in 2000. She used to watch RAW dedicatedly, and even went to some of their fights when they came to town. I thought it was kind of strange, but I didn't judge her for it. There's nothing wrong with being a girl wrestling fan, be proud of it!
