Bridge To Terabithia

Sunday 17 January, 7pm

From New Zealand's Academy Award-winning visual effects wizards, Weta Digital (The Lord Of The Rings, King Kong) comes a fantasy/adventure story of friendship, family and the power of imagination, in TV2's Sunday Summer Blockbuster, Bridge To Terabithia.

Filmed in New Zealand, the story follows Jess Aarons (Josh Hutcherson, RV), who is an outsider at school and even in his own family. After training all summer to become the fastest kid in his school class, his goal is unexpectedly thwarted by the new girl in school, Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory) who competes in the 'boys only' race and wins. Despite their awkward introduction, the two outsiders quickly become best friends.

Both filled with imagination for stories of fantasy and magic, they create the secret kingdom of Terabithia, a magical place only accessible by swinging on an old rope over a stream in the woods near their homes. There, the friends rule the kingdom, fight the Dark Master and his creatures, and plot against the school bullies.

Award-winning author, Katherine Paterson says she had her doubts about her book becoming a film, but is pleased with the evocation of the imaginary kingdom of Terabithia.

"I admit one of my biggest worries about turning the book into a film was what Terabithia itself would be like. For the past 30 years, readers have been creating Terabithia in their own imaginations, and no two readers will ever have the same vision of the place."

The film could not have been in better hands though, with her son David, for whom she originally wrote the book, taking the reigns as the co-writer and producer.

David says: "I always felt so protective towards this story. For me, it was never just about making a movie, but about really honouring my mother, the life of the book and my best friend Lisa, who started it all. The most important thing of all to me was to keep the spirit of the book alive, while finding a way to transform it from a novel that takes place mostly in the characters' heads, to a dynamic visual medium. But, no matter what, it had to be about friendship and imagination."

Neighbours

Weekdays date, 6pm

Neighbours returns to TV2 tonight, where a betrayed Stephanie (Carla Bonner) makes a mistake she can't take back.

Having witnessed a kiss between Libby (Kym Valentine) and Lucas (Scott Major), Stephanie believes they are having a rebound fling. While Lucas and Libby discuss their issues and come to the conclusion their kiss was just a meaningless mistake, Stephanie misunderstands the situation, and ends up making a bigger mistake of her own.

Stephanie has long harboured feelings for Lucas, but was warned off doing anything about it by her friend Libby, as Lucas was together with Elle. But with Elle now out of the country, it looks to Stephanie like Libby has made a move on Lucas.

Always unlucky in love, Stephanie sees the kiss between Libby and Lucas as just another hit, as actress Carla Bonner explains.

"Stephanie is in love with Lucas, and to see him kissing someone else - and of all people her best friend - she is absolutely rocked. Steph was there for Libby through some pretty tough times so this really hurts."

Long-time friends and neighbours, Stephanie and Libby have a history of going for the same men, and while this is not the first time Stephanie has been betrayed by Libby, it could be the last.

"Steph is not the kind of person to jump on Lucas as soon as Elle has left," explains Bonner, "she isn't that calculating. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and Libby knew of her feelings for Lucas, so Steph really feels deceived."

Also this week, the teens anxiously await their Victorian Certificate of Education results. Devastated to have missed out on a score that would get him into a business degree, Declan (James Sorensen) lashes out at Zeke (Matthew Werkmeister) for his complacency. Kate (Ashleigh Brewer) chastises Declan for taking his issues out on other people, and tensions run high between them. Sick of the backbiting, Donna (Margot Robbie) demands to know what's going on.

If you have missed an episode, full episodes of Neighbours will be available free online 12 hours after the show has aired on TV2. Go to tvnz.co.nz and click the 'ondemand' button.

Shortland Street

Weekdays, 7pm

Morgan Braithewaite's (Bonnie Soper) sudden death leaves Ferndale reeling in shock on Shortland Street this week, when her dead body is discovered. A kind and generous woman, Morgan's death devastates many - especially her sister, Nicole (Sally Martin).

When Morgan doesn't come home from the Christmas party, Nicole and friends Gerald (Harry McNaughton) and Hunter (Lee Donoghue) grow concerned for her safety. Starting a search party, the trio are floored when they discover her body, not far from the vineyard where she was last seen.

"Nicole is completely shell-shocked. It doesn't really sink in at first - it's just the last thing that she imagined might have happened to her sister," says Sally Martin. "I think she's numb to the reality. It takes a while to really process."

Despite the terrible news, Nicole attempts to continue on at work, in an effort to keep herself busy. But the fact that she has lost her sister soon catches up on her.

"Nicole finds Morgan's death particularly hard, because she had just found a sort of kindred spirit in her," says Martin. "Morgan and Nicole share the same father, but only met for the first time several months ago. She adored Morgan though, and they became incredible friends really quickly. This isn't just losing a sister for Nicole - Morgan was her best friend and closest confident."

With an immense amount of pain, anger and sadness, Nicole has an incredibly difficult journey ahead of her.

"Nicole has a lot of healing to do. She only just recently lost her dad, and Morgan's death really adds to that pain," says Martin. "I think she's going to have a hard road through the grief. It's all just been compounded having lost another person that meant so much to her."

Good friends in real life too, Martin is sorry to see Soper leave Shortland Street.

"Bonnie is fantastic. She's a very talented actor and it was really helpful to have someone who was willing to work together and get the most out of emotional scenes - and we had a lot. I'll miss her - she was the person I worked with most when I first started on Shorty, so she helped wean me into the groove of things."

Be sure to tune in this week to see the gripping aftermath of Shortland Street's shocking Christmas cliffhanger.

If you have missed an episode, full episodes of Shortland Street will be available free online 12 hours after the show has aired on TV2. Go to tvnz.co.nz and click the 'ondemand' button. Special

Derren Brown: The System

Tuesday 19 January, 11.35pm

One of Britain's most famous psychological illusionist brings another extraordinary example of his talents to TV2 tonight, in Derren Brown: The System.

In this special, Brown takes a random member of the public and begins sending her anonymous predictions, 24 hours before a series of horse races. Over the course of a few weeks, the woman sees the system working time and again, and so begins placing larger and larger bets, winning every time. Can Brown convince her to stake everything she has on one final bet?

Brown explains that it has been one of his life-long ambitions to develop the incredible feat.

"I was rather obsessed with gambling as a teenager and, in particular, the idea of winning systems," he says. "It was around that time that this system was born."

Astonishingly, the process has proved to work, and in this show he puts the seemingly impossible technique into practice.

"This system allows me to predict 24 hours in advance, quite openly, which horse will win, in big high-profile races," he says. "To prove this, I took a random member of the public, and I told her which horse was going to win in a certain race. It did win, she was intrigued - I then did it again, and again, and again."

The lucky recipient of Brown's tips is Kadisha, a single mother from London, who has to work two jobs in order to make ends meet. Brown ultimately asks the woman to take an incredible leap of faith in his system, as he explains.

"Today, [Kadisha] has scraped together every last penny she can find - and she's risking it all on one final race. Is it really possible to accurately predict the winner of a horse race again and again? I'm going to tell you exactly how that's done."

If she wins in Brown's final race, she'll gain a life-changing sum of money - but will she really risk every penny she has on a horse race?

American Idol

Friday 22 January, 8.30pm

Hot on the heels of its US transmission, American Idol returns for a new season to TV2.

Last season's finale boasted a record-breaking 100 million votes cast in the crowning of Kris Allen as the winner, making it the most popular series yet. This year, Paula Abdul's seat on the panel is vacant, as the Idol stalwart has left the show - and the sensational Ellen Degeneres will take her place on the podium for the LIVE shows, as the fourth permanent judge.

Speaking on her daily show, which broadcasts weekdays on TV ONE at 3pm, Degeneres announced that she was the new judge.

"I'm not leaving [the talk-show]. I'm going to have a day job, and a night job - the times we're living in, we're all doing that," she jokes.

The well-know comedian and sit-com star announced she was surprised and delighted to be offered the job working on Idol, as she's been a fan since its launch in 2002.

"I don't know how it happened. I've not missed one episode of that show, I love everything about it. I love music, and hopefully I'll be the people's point of view."

Degeneres admits she won't be looking at the performances from a technical perspective, but rather as a fan.

"I sit at home and I watch it, and I'm not looking at it from the producer's mind. I'm looking at it as the person who's going to buy the music and who's going to relate to that [artist]. I'm hopefully going to be the voice of what we're all saying at home."

Before Ellen takes her seat on the panel, tune in for the start of the audition rounds this week, where Paula Abdul will be replaced by a number of superstar guest judges, including Victoria Beckham, Mary J Blige, Joe Jonas, and Katy Perry. Returning to the judging panel this year are Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi, and Ryan Seacrest is back to host the show.
