What's hot on Kiwi TV: Being Human

The Cast of Being Human

Sometimes it's tough being human, especially when you're a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf. So sets the premise for Prime's latest Brit import 'Being Human'. The first episode of season one screened on Prime at 9.30pm last night and is a supernatural thriller/drama based on the lives of three twenty-somethings as they struggle to live in a world that considers them to be monsters.

You've probably never heard of the cast members because they're (mostly) unknowns, especially to New Zealand viewers. Aidan Turner (who plays Mitchell the vampire) has recently been seen romping around in 19th century England as poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rosetti in 'Desperate Romantics' but the other two stars of the show, Russell Tovey (George the werewolf) and Lenora Crichlow (Annie the ghost) are new to New Zealand telly.

If you're a lover of vampires, ghosts and werewolves, you will really enjoy Being Human. The writing is superb and the characters have been really fleshed out to the point where their background stories alone makes for some interesting viewing. Being Human combines a great cast, a fantastic storyline and characters you can really relate to. There's something strangely compelling about a vampire living with a werewolf (when traditionally, vampires hate werewolves and vice versa) and if that wasn't weird enough, shacking up with a ghost in a flat in Bristol who seems to be haunting it for reasons unknown.

The show first screened in the U.K. in 2008 so we are a little bit behind here. The third season has already started filming in the U.K. so if you tune in and decide you like the show, you'll be happy to know it's doing quite well overseas. The show has been picked up by BBC America and it has been confirmed that there will be a US-based remake of the show.

Being Human screens at 9.30pm on Prime every Wednesday. Check out the BBC America trailer.
