Debbie Ferry's life has been turned upside down after an unexpected phone call from Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking this morning.
The North Shore woman has had a tough couple of years - battling breast cancer and dealing with a marriage break-up. After having a breast removed, the scarring left her "feeling ugly" and facing the prospect of a 2-year wait for reconstruction surgery.
Thelma Craib-Scott, Ferry's work colleague of 20 years, decided she "didn't want to see her friend cry anymore" and nominated her as part of Newstalk ZB's regular competition, "Mike's Magic".
The competition solicits listeners to nominate worthy recipients for dream prizes - previous winners have included Wellington man who won travel and expenses to New York for a dancing scholarship, and an entire class from Woolston Primary School (Christchurch), was flown to Wellington for a day trip.
Ferry was speechless as New Zealand's number one radio show presented her with a $300 Day Spa voucher, a $300 hair make-over and $500 of designer clothes.
But it was what came next that amazed Newstalk ZB's listeners across the country.
Breakfast Host Mike Hosking calmly informed Ferry, "We have arranged a free consultation with Breast Surgeon, Dr. Belinda Scott" and, "If you are approved as a suitable candidate for reconstructive surgery by Dr. Scott, SHE WILL WORK WITH ANOTHER HIGHLY QUALIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON TO SET A SURGERY PLAN FOR RECONSTRUCTION."
The show's producers had been working for weeks with the likes of the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation, Southern Cross Healthcare and Dr. Belinda Scott to make this unprecedented opportunity a reality.
Both Ferry and Craib-Scott were in tears on air, with Debbie blurting out, "I thought this was never going to happen... EVER!"
