“Your-Big-Break” is something everyone looks for in life and especially if you’re in the world of the arts. So when a film competition was announced called “Your-Big-Break” it didn’t take long for people all over the world to enter it. The short film competition was run by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings), Barrie Osborne (LOTR, The Matrix) and Tourism NZ. The theme for the films was "100% Pure New Zealand: The youngest country on Earth". The five finalists got to make a film in Queenstown with Barrie producing and Peter judging. The winner's film was then screened on American TV!

1084 film ideas were entered into the competition from all over the world and in fact only about one-quarter of these came from New Zealand. One of those 1084 entries was from kiwi Tim McLachlan who ended up being one of the five finalists and was flown down to Queenstown to make a $100,000 3-minute short film. The other four finalists were one from Argentina, two from the USA and one other kiwi. Tim’s film stars the young James Rolleston who is the star of the new Taika Waititi film ‘Boy’ that is soon to be in cinemas throughout New Zealand.

Tim’s film ‘Frosty Man and the BMX Kid’ didn’t go on to win the overall prize, which went to the film maker from Argentina, but it has started its own life on the internet and has been picking up the most interest of the five films. The lead singer of the American band Paramore, Hayley Williams, who was recently in New Zealand for a concert, saw the film online and twittered her 500,000 followers to check it out and it instantly picked up 5,000 views in the first 6 hours of her doing that! Also people have been spreading around cell phone sound bites of the film and its very quotable lines, and a facebook group called “Eat Some Ice Creams, Do Some Bombs” has also been created in support of the film!

Up to today the two versions of the film have had over 28,500 hits in just over 2 weeks on youtube. The original “Your-Big-Break” version has had over 22,000 and the extended version has had over 6,500. So although he did not win, all this exposure could end up bringing Tim his big break anyway! Also with comments like this from Peter Jackson about the film the odds are in his favour for getting that break. “This captured the Kiwi spirit and sense of humour very well. It was engaging and funny in the very best way. Imaginative use of camera angles and snappy editing. It worked at 3 mins, and could just as easily form the basis for something longer. Hopefully, we’ll see more of the BMX Kid!”
