Janet Pope, the new owner of the iconic Helena Bay Café, is maintaining the cafes commitment to smokefree outdoor dining that the previous owners put in place when they opened 12 years ago.

Northland DHB and Cancer Society Northland presented Janet with the Smokefree Cafe Award for her continuation of the cafes smokefree outdoor dining policy.

"When we brought the café we wanted to create an enjoyable experience for our customers we kept the smokefree policy as we just don’t like smoking and we don’t think that smoking and eating go together, people come here for the food, the coffee and the setting, they don’t come to smoke," said Janet. This is an example of a business creating a more enjoyable dining experience and a better environment for staff. "At this time of the year, the outdoor dining area has the best seats in the house; you can enjoy the sunshine, the scenery, the food and the coffee at Helena Bay Cafe all without a side of smoke" says Bridget Rowse - Smokefree Advisor Northland District Health Board. "Making your outdoor area smokefree is easy, spaces like this work,"

Northland DHB and Cancer Society Northland regard smokefree outdoor areas as a worthwhile step towards achieving the government’s goal of Smokefree New Zealand by 2025, and hope that many more premises with outdoor areas will follow suit.

Helena Bay Café is open 7 days 10am-5pm during the summer months, come along have a coffee, something to eat, enjoy the gallery, gardens and the smokefree air.
