Waikato is one of New Zealand’s major tertiary hospitals, where teaching and research plays an important part in the quality of services we give to our patients.

Now in its fifth year, the Clyde Wade Award recognises the excellence of Waikato DHB’s clinical teaching and this year’s award went to specialist Dr Matthew Phillips.

With over 100 physicians, Dr Phillips stood out amongst 30 other strong nominees who were voted in by registered medical officers (RMOs).

Dr Phillips is a neurologist based at Waikato Hospital.

Dr Clyde Wade read out some of the feedback in Dr Phillips’ nomination forms that included:

Tirelessly and committed clinician who has transformed neurology teaching at Waikato Hospital

His weekly bedside teaching for pre-exam basic physician training in their lead up to their clinical examinations highlight a teaching style that supports training and learning through direct guidance

A prime example of a teacher who loves his works and goes above and beyond

Excellent clinical supervision in teaching and takes times to discuss interesting salient aspects of cases in clinic as well as clear, key learning points

Outstanding dedication to teaching and genuine interest in improving neurology exam skills for juniors.

At the award ceremony, the Waikato Excellence in Surgical Education Awards was given out for its second time ever to senior registrar Eric Tan.

The Medical Registrar Award was also given to:

Dr Parvinder Heran

Dr Ayan Sabih

Alongside this the senior resident certificates were given as well as the new senior resident announcements for 2019-2020.

The Department of Physician Education at Waikato DHB has done an outstanding job ensuring excellent training and support is given to all registrars and works incredibly hard to ensure training programmes are continually developed and improved. As a result of this, Waikato registrars had a phenomenal result in its clinical exams this year.

More about the Clyde Wade Award

Dr Clyde Wade is a former head of medicine and Waikato DHB board member who, after retiring as a cardiologist, created the award to recognise excellence in clinical teaching by adult medicine physicians.

Clyde commissioned Whare Heke, a Tauranga artist and carver, to design a trophy based on a deer antler from Clyde’s deer farm. The deer antler is carved into a stylised koru (representing growth and new beginnings) and sits on a wooden base of pohutukawa from Ohiwa Harbour in the Bay of Plenty.

The award consists of the trophy (which is passed on each year), a certificate and a plaque listing the recipients’ names which is displayed in the Department of Medicine. All nominees received either a certificate or a letter.
