Wellington, Dec 3 NZPA - Health warnings remain in place for Lake Wiritoa near Wanganui and people are being advised not to use the water for recreational purposes.

Tests carried out by Horizons Regional Council continue to show the presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) that may produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals if swallowed or through contact with skin.

No warning is currently in place for Dudding Lake, near Marton, however potentially toxic blue-green algae are present.

MidCentral Health is warning people to avoid recreational contact with the water at Dudding Lake if it is cloudy, discoloured or has small globules suspended in it.

Exposure to cyanobacterial toxins may cause symptoms such as skin rashes, nausea, tummy upset and tingling and numbness around the mouth or finger tips.
