West Coast DHB CEO David Meates expressed his pleasure at the interest generated in this first phase of engagement regarding the proposal.

“We are very pleased that the community has taken the time to give us some feedback on what is important to them.

Forty-two written submissions were received from the public, staff and unions regarding the proposed Buller Integrated Family Health Centre. This feedback followed a public meeting in Westport and the subsequent release of the Sapere Report – Buller Health services plan working paper: Model of care description, capacity estimation and options analysis.

“There were a variety of opinions expressed around whether the proposed facility should be on one or two sites with no clear preference from the community.

“One message that came across strongly is that recruitment and retention of health staff is very important to this community. People are an integral part of the future of this DHB and we are committed to attracting and keeping the best possible staff not only to Buller, but for the whole of the Coast.”

Another theme, expressed in a number of the submissions received, was that healthcare services were more important than new healthcare facilities for the people of the Buller.

David Meates says the next steps are for more detailed planning to continue on both the single site and split site options at the same time as the model of care for healthcare in the Buller is further refined. Staff and unions will be involved throughout this phase and the public will be kept informed with ongoing developments.
