Every Child Counts is backing the 26 for Babies campaign to be launched at Parliament tomorrow in support of the Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Six Months' Paid Leave) Amendment Bill.

The Bill received a majority of votes in parliament tonight and has been referred to the Government Administration Select Committee.

"Paid parental leave is important for babies and parents because it supports secure attachment and breastfeeding, thereby increasing child health and delivering cost-savings to the economy," says Liz Gibbs, Chair of Every Child Counts.

"Paid parental leave also has other benefits for the economy by overcoming barriers to women's participation in work and enabling them to remain attached to the labour force when they have a child.

"The current provision of 14 weeks paid parental leave is low when compared with other OECD countries, where the average entitlement is 19 weeks. A gradual extension of paid parental leave, phased over time so that is affordable, is in the interests of our nation's youngest citizens and wider society.

"Every Child Counts is pleased to be working with the members of the 26 for Babies campaign to promote public understanding of the benefits of extending paid parental leave and encourage all political parties to support the Bill currently before parliament," concludes Liz Gibbs.
