Kevin Atkinson To Chair HBDHB's Board

Hawke's Bay businessman Kevin Atkinson will return to the chairman's seat of the Hawke's Bay District Health Board when it sits for the first time on December 15.

Minister of Health Tony Ryall announced the appointment along with four other appointed board members Ngahiwi Tomoana, who will be deputy chair, Barbara Arnott a current deputy commissioner, Hawke's Bay businessman Dan Druzianic and Wairoa's deputy mayor Denise Eaglesome.

Mr Atkinson said he was looking forward to positively participating in the health sector over the next three years and was committed to ensuring the DHB continued its improvements in meeting its health targets and getting the books balanced.

"For the community an elected board rather than a Governance Board would mean more accessibility to the public.

"During the local body elections it was clear the public was expecting to regain a stronger voice to represent Hawke's Bay - as a Board we will make this commitment," he said.

Chief executive Kevin Snee said he was delighted Kevin had been appointed chairman and was looking forward to working with him and building on the good work the Governance Board had done.

"Kevin is well known in the community and has a wealth of experience in governance and business and is a Hawke's Bay man through and through. I have enjoyed working with him in my first year in Hawke's Bay and have found his support invaluable. I am sure that our partnership will help take the DHB forward and build on the good platform that has been laid," Dr Snee said.

Mr Atkinson said he was impressed with the progress management had made in addressing both performance and financial control over the last year under Dr Snee's leadership, and the strong bond that had developed between the board and management which would be at the heart of the DHB's continued success in the next three years. "I would like to review the site redevelopment plan that was set aside in 2008 and I want to support opportunities to provide better integration between Community and Hospital care, while making greater inroads to the levels of inequality in health outcomes that we see across our region."

Mr Atkinson has been on the Board for 10 years, seven as Chairman, he is principal director of Information Management Services (IMSPayroll), Chairman of Unison Networks Limited and a Director of Hawke's Bay Rugby.
